What's On Your Skin?

Hello, I'm Sarah. Like you, I am the cook, maid, bookkeeper, product researcher and designated shopper in my household.  I have a wonderful hard-working husband, but I seem to have the sole responsibility of making the decisions about providing my family with food, clothing and supplies that keep us fed, warm and safe.

I am an obsessive label reader.  I always have been, and I can freely admit this. It's how I started my company, afterall!  Back before I had kids, I never gave much thought to the ingredients in the cleaning products I used in my home or the soaps, lotions and potions I applied to my skin.  It's amazing how your priorities change after you have children. How many of us will spend hours researching the products we buy for our littles but don't give a second thought to the things we buy for ourselves?

Our skin is our body’s largest organ.  When I began essential8 three years ago, you couldn't find truly natural personal care and cleaning products unless you went to your local natural food store. Times are changing. The public has spoken, and we are tired of being greenwashed into buying products that we believe are safe.

Some cosmetic companies are beginning to advertise products that are free of parabens and phthalates.  Parabens may have the ability to mimic estrogen in the human body, much as hormones added to our food supply have been proven to do.  Phthalates are often added to products under the guise of “fragrance.”  Exposure to phthalates may cause a wide range of health and reproductive problems in people including kidney, liver, lung and reproductive damage.  A study conducted by the CDC found phthalates in virtually every person tested, but women of child-bearing age had levels up to 20 times higher than the rest of the population.

Marketing products as "paraben-free," "phthalate-free," or "all-natural" is just not enough! Beauty brands are not legally obligated to list all ingredients on their packaging. Many brands hide unsavory chemicals under the guise of "fragrance." This catch-all term can include all sorts of yuckies that you wouldn't want on your skin. I am proud to say that ALL essential8 products proudly include each ingredient on the labels. We have no secrets.

In my next post, I'll give you some more information about ingredients to avoid in personal care products and a fun little printable to take with you on your next shopping trip!
