Learn about Sarah Walker and the story of essential8...

Sarah Walker began her business, essential8, as a hobby in 2011. After having two children less than two years apart, she began paying close attention to the ingredients listed in the cleaning and personal care products she was using in her home. Label reading led to research. She was surprised and alarmed to discover that many commonly used chemicals are endocrine disruptors, estrogen mimickers and petroleum by-products. Dissatisfied and frustrated with these products that were marketed as “healthy” and “all-natural,” Sarah began to create her own products. Her first creations included several organic castile soap-based cleaners, which remain the staple of her line today.

The name essential8 comes from a desire to keep things simple. The list of sustainable, healthy ingredients available on this earth is relatively short. All original essential8 recipes contain 8 ingredients or less. The word "essential" has two meanings; I only include ingredients in that are truly beneficial and necessary to make a product complete. Why throw in all the yucky stuff if it isn't going to make the product any healthier? All products are scented using only essential oils.

All essential8 products are free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, dyes and artificial fragrance. All essential8 products are carefully handcrafted in small batches using organic, natural and sustainable ingredients like essential oils, organic shea butter, organic sunflower oil, cocoa butter, neem oil, and locally harvested beeswax. From organic cleaners to unique skincare salves and balms, essential8 offers natural products for every member of your family.

I knew I was on the right track with the cleaning products when my youngest son was about 9 months old. I was preparing for a sales event for my new business. I had my products in a box by the back door, ready to load into my car. I ran upstairs to put the finishing touches on my make-up and hair. Two minutes later, I heard Griffin (my 9-month-old) crying. I stood, listening at the door for a minute. Sydney (my daughter) came running to the bottom of the stairs, happily saying, “Mommy, I cleaned Griffin!!” I immediately came running down the stairs to find poor Griffin dripping from head to toe, hair matted to his head, shirt soaked. In a panic, I asked Sydney what she had sprayed on her brother, and she innocently pointed to the essential8 All-Purpose cleaner I had in the box – as if to say, “Why wouldn’t I want to clean my stinky brother???” I scooped a sopping wet baby off the floor, relieved that there was no need to call Poison Control, and turned on the bath. I rinsed him off, and five minutes later, I had a sparkling clean baby who was no worse for the wear.”
